KIS Security Information for Faculty/Staff Laptop or Home Desktop Configuration

The following categories constitute the different areas that require attention to keep your computer secure from viruses, hackers and other security threats.

Windows Update - Microsoft frequently releases updates to the Microsoft Windows operating systems and Office programs. The updates fix critical vulnerabilities in the Microsoft software. The vulnerabilities are software flaws that permit a virus or hacker to gain access to computers. KIS recommends that you set your home machine(s) to automatically update.

*Important Note: When you go to Windows Update Site below, select Custom Install. Then it will look for available updates. If you see Service Pack 2 listed as an update, click Review Other Updates and install all these updates.
To see if your computer has the most up-to-date fixes, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com

Symantec Anti-Virus - Symantec Anti-Virus is a program that detects and cleans computer viruses that compromise security. Symantec releases new virus definitions (usually weekly) to combat new viruses. Without new virus definitions, the Anti-Virus program would not be able to detect new viruses. Click here to see current settings or change the frequency of the Anti-Virus auto-updates. When the Anti-Virus software is up-to-date, it will quarantine new viruses, restricting their quick spread and limiting the opportunity for users to click on harmful attachments.

Home Wireless Network Security - Many people have wireless networks in their homes but do not have them secure. While KIS cannot know every wireless router configuration, we have provided some basic, actionable steps that will greatly increase wireless security.

Please click here to see the steps to increase wireless security at home.

Windows XP Firewall - A firewall prevents Internet traffic that could form a security hazard from accessing your computer. Windows XP has a built-in firewall. To see how to turn on and configure the Windows XP Firewall please click here. If you do not have Windows XP, and are interested in a possible firewall recommendation please see your KIS department representative.
