Kellogg Classroom AV & Computer Services
CLASSROOM FACILITIES
Classrooms are equipped with the following: Laptop connection,
VCR, video projector, ethernet connection, sound
speakers (for laptop, VCR, microphone), wireless microphone capability
(special request), and transparency overhead projector. Selected
classrooms have an electric & network connection at every student seat
or a 3/4" tape deck. All classrooms in the Jacobs Center and Allen
Center have wireless network access. See Kellogg
Classroom Equipment Summary for details on equipment in every specific
classroom. See Instructions
for Kellogg Classroom A/V & Computer Equipment for detailed sign
information posted in classrooms.
Laptop Connections: All classrooms have a laptop connection
which provides network connectivity, audio, and projector display.
Classroom equipment is fully consistent with Kellogg Laptop Program computers
from 1998 to present. All other laptops should be checked in advance for
consistency. Instructions for plugging in a laptop are posted in
each classroom. Please call for assistance if you need it.
Laptop Service: Faculty and guests may request that a laptop
be delivered and set up in the classroom for a class session as needed.
Classroom laptops are delivered with an external wired
mouse by default. Please use our web-based Classroom
Laptop Request System to request laptop service for the Jacobs Center
or Wieboldt Hall. Requests for Allen Center laptop service should be made
through your program facilitator. To ensure availability of equipment and
assistance, a classroom laptop should be requested at least 48 hours
in advance.
File Access: Faculty can access their computer files by
the following methods (in order of preference):
-
Put your files on your laptop hard drive.
- Post your files to your course web directory in advance. You may
put them on your web page for display or not. Once you are in the
classroom, if a file is on your web page for display, access it by navigating
to your web page. If a file is not on display, type the full
URL of the desired file into the web browser window. The proper MS
Office application will automatically launch, given that you used the default
Office file extension.
-
Post your files to your Kellogg network home directory (also known as your
H: drive).
- For backup, bring your files on a CD, DVD, flash drive, or e-mail them to yourself
as attachments.
Wireless Microphone Service: Allen Center classrooms are always
equipped with a wireless microphone. Use of a wireless microphone
is by request only in the Jacobs Center and Wieboldt Hall. Reqests for wireless microphone service should be made by faculty or staff
via our web-based Classroom
Laptop Request System. In the comments box, note that you need
a wireless microphone (and note whether you do or do not need a laptop
as well). To ensure availability of equipment and assistance, please
make a request at least 48 hours in advance. If the request is
made late on the day before or on the same day because of illness-induced
voice problems, please also call the appropriate emergency assistance phone
number (below) with your request.
CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE
Support Hours
- To assist faculty in the classroom, staff are on call as follows:
- Jacobs Center: M-Th 8:00am - 9:30pm, Fri 8:00am - 5:30pm
- Allen Center: During all executive education sessions
- Wieboldt Hall: M-Th 5-9:30pm
Emergency Assistance
- Faculty should initiate a request for emergency assistance:
- Jacobs Center: Use classroom phone to call 847-467-2200, for the Student Tech Support Center, Jacobs 163. (Note that the Jacobs Center PA operates from Jacobs 158, 847-467-3031, but is rarely at the phone there.)
- Allen Center: Use classroom phone to call 847-467-7041, for the Allen Center PA office, or 847-491-0000, for the Allen Center Front Desk
- Wieboldt Hall: Use classroom phone to call 312-503-8387, for the TMP main office
- Tell the worker who answers the phone that you are a faculty member needing immediate assistance in the classroom and state the general nature of the problem (e.g. no projector display, no network connection, fuzzy picture on VCR). He/she will immediately radio the A/V specialist on call with a message, such as “Prof Smith needs immediate help in Jacobs 101 with the computer projector,” and request confirmation that the A/V specialist is on the way.
- The A/V specialist will come in and ask you about the problem, or wait for you to break away if class has already started. If the classroom specialist cannot fix the problem within 5 minutes, they will ask if you would like them to bring in a portable “crash cart” with a projector, VCR, and/or laptop. It is generally possible to bring in the crash cart within 15 minutes.
Non-Emergency Assistance
If faculty need to report a problem with classroom equipment
that does not require immediate attention, they should enter a request
into the KIS
Service Request System, under their own name/NetID, providing the classroom
# and the nature of the problem.
If faculty would like to learn more about the equipment in an
assigned classroom, they are encouraged to set up an appointment with
KIS
CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
VIDEOCONFERENCING
Faculty may request use of our Internet-based Polycom ViewStation videoconferencing
equipment in ANY Kellogg classroom in Jacobs Center, Allen Center, or Wieboldt
Hall. If your intended party also has Internet-capable videoconferencing
equipment, there is no cost for videoconferencing. If your intended
party uses an ISDN line for videoconferencing, we use a Northwestern gateway
to convert from IP to ISDN, and there is a significant per minute cost
for videoconferencing. Please request use of the Polycom ViewStation well
in advance from the KIS FaStCATS
kis-fastcats@kellogg.northwestern.edu who will assist you in determining if Kellogg's equipment is compatible
with your intended party's equipment, and if applicable, providing an estimated
cost.
