Overview

Microsoft releases security updates for the Windows operating system and Office software suite at least once a month through its Microsoft Update service. Many of these updates are critical — failing to install the update may leave your computer vulnerable to computer viruses or hackers. Some of the security vulnerabilities that Microsoft has released patches for allow viruses or hackers to take control of your computer just by connecting to it on the network — you don't need to open a virus-infected email attachment. Keeping up-to-date with Microsoft's security updates will help protect your computer.

Kellogg Laptop Program Computers

Beginning with the KLP ThinkPad T43 laptop, Kellogg laptops are set to download and install Microsoft Updates automatically. These updates include updates for Windows as well as Office.

The KLP ThinkPad T41 is set to download only Windows Updates by default. KLP ThinkPad T41 owners can visit Windows Update to install Microsoft Update, which includes updates for Office.

Previous KLP laptops, including the ThinkPad T40 and T23 are updated manually.

Instructions for each laptop follow: T60 | T43 | T41 | T40 | T23

KLP ThinkPad T60p, T60 and T43

The KLP ThinkPad T60p, T60, T43 and T41 are set to constantly check Microsoft's Update service for updates. When Microsoft posts new critical updates, your laptop downloads them.

KLP ThinkPad T60p, T60 and T43 laptops are enabled for Microsoft Update, which includes Office updates as well.

Automatic Installation
7 days a week at 7 p.m., your laptop will check to see if new updates have been downloaded. If there are new updates ready to install, you will be prompted to install them.

Once Windows finishes installing the updates, you may be prompted to reboot your computer. Please reboot if prompted to make sure the updates are installed as soon as possible.

Manual Installation
You do not need to wait until 7 p.m.to install the updates. When new updates are ready to install, you will see a pop-up alert like the one shown at right.

On the KLP T60p which runs Windows Vista, a similar prompt will appear.

To install the updates, double-click the Windows Update icon ()in the system tray (bottom right corner of screen).

You will be prompted to install the updates. Click the Install button.

Once Windows finishes installing the updates, you may be prompted to reboot your computer. Please reboot if prompted to make sure the updates are installed as soon as possible.

Kellogg Faculty & Staff Desktop Computers

Kellogg Faculty & Staff desktop computers are set to automatically download and install Microsoft Updates. As part of KIS's new security enhancements all computers that are constantly plugged into the network will check for new updates at 3:00 AM every night. If there are new updates, the computer will automatically install the update and restart.

Please remember, in order for this to happen, all users are asked to leave their computers on. KIS recommends logging off when you are not in the office so that applications and unsaved data which are running do not cause a problem with the update. KIS would like users to log off so that they are reminded to save and close all programs before they leave, in case the computer installs an update and reboots.

If you would prefer to leave yourself logged into the computer then please make sure that the data that is currently opened has been saved in case the computer needs to reboot. If you decide to log off this action will not affect Remote Desktop or file sharing from off-campus.

Please contact the KIS Faculty/Staff Computing Group if you have any questions.
