Setting the Mail Format Options in Outlook XP

In this document:

Background

Your classmates, recruiters, and potential employers may be unable to read attachments you've e-mailed if you have not configured Outlook correctly. Outlook must be set to send mail in HTML format, not Rich Text. If you send attachments in Rich Text formatted e-mail messages, recipients using Eudora and Lotus Notes will receive a blank WINMAIL.DAT file instead of the attachment. In addition, even if you don't attach files, recipients using Eudora or Lotus Notes will receive a WINMAIL.DAT file attached to every message you send them.

By default, all Kellogg Laptop Program computers were set to send mail in HTML format. If you have changed your mail settings and need to switch back to HTML format, see below.

Instructions

In Outlook, click the Tools menu, then select Options...

Click the Mail Format tab. In the Message format pulldown menu, select HTML.

Click Apply, then OK. You can now send e-mail without having to worry about whether the recipients will be able to open your attachments.
