Overview
Smartphones, such as Palms, Treos, and BlackBerries, are very convenient devices that allow you to be connected anywhere to your email, contacts, calendar, and the web all with the functionality of a mobile phone. When this is combined with the potential of Kellogg's new Microsoft Exchange 2007 messaging and calendaring environment and upcoming enhanced cell phone coverage within the Jacobs Center, KIS recognizes the growing need for these tools to integrate. We are always evaluating and researching the Smartphone landscape in order to provide as much information as possible to the Kellogg community regarding these devices.

Kellogg Information Systems has tested the following devices and software with our Microsoft Exchange 2007 messaging and calendaring environment:

Smartphone Purchasing Recommendations
When students are about to begin their Kellogg career, we are often asked if we have any recommendations for students looking to purchase a Smartphone. We hope that the information below can help provide some insight.
Whether or not to purchase a Smartphone:
While we recognize that more students are using Smartphones in the professional world, we have not traditionally seen a large population at Kellogg, even in recent years. Students tend to need the full capabilities of their laptops to perform a great deal of their daily schoolwork. We recognize that with the added features and functionality of our new Exchange email and calendaring system, this may change. However, we recommend all students adopt a "wait and see" approach prior to coming to Kellogg.
Which Smartphone to purchase:
Unfortunately, the wide range of devices available in the market today come with a great deal of complexity as well. The environment for synchronizing these devices with Microsoft Exchange 2007 is not yet fully supported by all Smartphone manufacturers and, in some cases, require extra hardware and software in order to connect to each other. Kellogg continues to monitor the landscape in this regard, so this information may change over time.
Kellogg Information Systems does not recommend any particular Smartphone.
We can only state what our current Microsoft Exchange 2007 infrastructure currently supports, which is outlined above.
Provider Recommendations:
With the new internal vendor-neutral antennae system set for completion in the fall of 2007, Kellogg is pleased to announce that students can expect to receive full coverage from anywhere within the Jacobs Center regardless of provider. We have already gone live with our first carrier, AT&T/Cingular, and other carriers (Sprint/Nextel, Verizon, US Cellular, and T-Mobile) will follow in the coming months.
Wireless access (Wi-Fi):
If you are purchasing a Smartphone that is wi-fi enabled, please verify that it supports WPA2 Enterprise using 802.1X authentication. This is the standard required in order to connect to the Northwestern University wireless network.
Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) Recommendations:
NUIT has developed a web page with an overview for people considering purchasing a Smartphone for use at Northwestern. While there is some valuable information on this page, not all of the information is applicable to the Kellogg environment.
Support
Kellogg Information Systems is currently not able to provide full support or documentation for all Smartphone devices beyond what is listed above. Please contact us with any questions you may have regarding specific Smartphone support or recommendations. |
