Recovering Deleted Items in Outlook 2003

Overview

These steps will walk you through recovering user-deleted email and calendar items from the Exchange server, via either Outlook or WeMail (Outlook Web Access). Only items deleted within the past 14 days will be available for restoration. Items deleted more than 14 days prior are not recoverable.

WARNING: These steps require editing the Windows Registry, a vital component of your operating system. Incorrectly modifying the Registry settings can cause signifact problems with your laptop. Therefore, if you are not familiar with modifying the Registry, please bring your laptop to the Student Technical Support Center during normal business hours and a consultant can complete this process for you. If you are comfortable editing the Windows Registry, please follow the steps below.


How to recover Outlook 2003 deleted items

1. Close Outlook.. Open the registry (click the Start > Run... and type regedit)

2. Browse to: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options

3. Click Edit > New > DWORD Value

4. Type DumpsterAlwaysOn with NO spaces.

5. Double click on the value, and set the DWORD value to 1

6. Close the registry editor


7. Make sure that you are connected to the internet. Open Outlook and connect to Exchange:

8. Click on the folder from which you deleted the email (usually the "Deleted Items" folder). Then click on Tools > Recover Deleted Items...

NOTE: If you pressed SHIFT + Delete to delete an email from a specific folder instead of putting it into the Deleted Items, you must first click on that folder and then go to Tools > Recover Deleted Items.

 


9. A “Recover Deleted Items” window will appear. Select the email(s) you would like to restore, and click “Restore Selected Items”:
