LiveUpdate

Symantec AntiVirus software is only effective if the virus definition files are up-to-date. This file is a database of current viruses used to detect and, in some cases, clean infected files. New viruses emerge often so it is crucial that you update Symantec's virus definition file on a weekly basis.

The Symantec AntiVirus automated update process is called LiveUpdate.

Note: You must be connected to the Internet to update Symantec.

1. Open Symantec AntiVirus by navigating the Start menu. (Start >> All Programs >> Utilities >> Symantec AntiVirus)

(On Non-Kellogg Laptop Program computers, Start >> All Programs >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition)

2. Click LiveUpdate.

3. LiveUpdate is pre-configured for you and will begin to download files from the Internet.

4. Click Close when this has been completed.

5. LiveUpdate will proceed to update your virus definition files. When this is completed, you will have successfully updated your files.

Scheduling LiveUpdate to run weekly

To schedule weekly updates, follow the steps below:

1. Click Start >> Control Panel then double-click Scheduled Tasks.

2. Double-click Add Scheduled Task.

3. Click Next to continue.

4. Scroll down and select Symantec LiveUpdate, then click Next.

5. New updates only come out once a week so change the task to perform on a Weekly basis. Click Next.

6. Choose the most convenient time for you to run the update. You should choose times when you are likely to be on the Internet, preferably with a high-speed connection, and at a time when you are not likely to be using the Internet intensely. Set the update to run every 1 week, and on Wednesday. Updates are released every Wednesday. Click Next when you are finished.

7. By default, the user name should be correct. Enter you Windows password twice(assuming you have one).

Click Next.

Note: If you have a Windows logon password and do not enter the password you will not be able to run the task.

8. Click Finish.

9. The new task should now be listed in the Scheduled Tasks window.

10. When the task is run you will be prompted to continue. Follow the instructions to procede.

When should you update your virus definition files?
When warned by Symantec AntiVirus

In some cases, you will be warned that your virus definition files are out of date. To prevent this window from popping up, you will need to run LiveUpdate.

When warned by KIS

In the event of a virus outbreak, KIS will make an announcement (through e-mail and/or posted signs), with instructions.

If you're not sure how long it's been since your last update

If you can't remember the last time you updated your AntiVirus software, you probably need to run LiveUpdate. If you want to make sure that your scheduled update is working, open Symantec AntiVirus and check the date on the Virus Definition File.
