Symantec scans all downloaded files for computer viruses, but unfortunately, it's not a foolproof system. Viruses can occasionally slip past if there is no record of the virus in Symantec's virus definition file. For best security, perform occasional virus scans of the entire hard drive.
Note: Run LiveUpdate to download the latest virus definiton files before scanning.
1. Open Symantec AntiVirus by navigating the Start menu. (Start >> All Programs >> Utilities >> Symantec AntiVirus) (On Non-Kellogg Laptop Program computers, Start >> All Programs >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition)
2. Double-click Scan and select Custom Scan in either the left or right frame. 3. Select the desired drives and folders to scan and click Scan to begin. The icons used to select folders is explained below
The file, drive, or folder is not selected. If the item is a drive or folder, the folders and files in it are also not selected. The individual file or folder is selected. All items within the folder or drive are selected.
You can schedule a time for Symantec AntiVirus to scan your hard drive for viruses. This is not necessary--Symantec already scans all files downloaded to your computer. However, viruses can occasionally slip past if there is no record of the virus in Symantec's virus definition file. Occasional scans of the entire hard drive will help protect your computer.
Scheduling a scan of your hard drive will only work if you're sure the computer will be on at the scheduled time. This option works best on desktops that are left on overnight. If you can't be sure your computer will be on at the scheduled times, manual scans, as outlined above, are a better option.
1. Open Symantec AntiVirus by navigating the Start menu. (Start >> All Programs >> Utilities >> Symantec AntiVirus)
(On Non-Kellogg Laptop Program computers, Start >> All Programs >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition >> Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition)
2. Double-click Scheduled Scans and select New Scheduled Scan. 3. Select Custom Scan and click Next.
4. Type in a name for this scheduled scan so that you can identify it later. Also type in a description of the scan.
Click Next.
5. Configure the desired settings for the scan.
Click Next.
6. Select the desired drives and folders to scan.
Click Save.
7. You're finished! The scan should be saved and displayed underneath Scheduled Scans in the left-hand window.
