Symantec AntiVirus

Northwestern University and Kellogg School of Management provide Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0 to protect your computer against viruses. Once installed, Symantec scans all files and programs downloaded to your computer. You can also schedule it to run scans on the entire hard drive or to download anti-virus updates.

Installing Symantec AntiVirus

Before installing Symantec, a couple considerations:

  • Symantec AntiVirus is pre-installed on all Kellogg Laptop Program laptops. If you have the KLP laptop, you do not need to install Symantec AntiVirus.

Updating Symantec AntiVirus

Anti-Virus software is only as good as its last update. With dozens of new viruses being written each month, it's crucial that you update your anti-virus software's "virus definition" file. This file contains a database of virus characteristics that is updated weekly with new virus descriptions.

KIS recommends students update their anti-virus software weekly (new updates are released every Wednesday). Click on the link above for instructions on how to update your anti-virus software.

Using Symantec AntiVirus

Symantec AntiVirus automatically scans downloaded files and programs for viruses. However, it's still a good idea to have Symantec scan the entire hard drive from time to time. You may inadvertently download a virus before the virus is included in your virus definition file.

Uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus

Important: You should not uninstall your anti-virus software unless you will be immediately re-installing it, or installing a different anti-virus program. Never leave your computer without any virus protection software installed.
