KelloggConnect (KLP)

Students, faculty, and staff who purchased the Kellogg Laptop Program computer can use KelloggConnect to access common network drives, such as the printers folder, web server, and your home directory.

If you do need to map a network drive not included in KelloggConnect, or if you have a non-Kellogg Laptop computer, you will need to manually map drives in Windows XP. See below for instructions.

To launch KelloggConnect, select it from the Start menu, or click the KelloggConnect icon in the quick launch tray, just to the right of the Start button, as illustrated at right.

Enter your password when prompted, and KelloggConnect will map the network drives for you. If successful, you should see the screen at right.

Your home directory will be mapped to the H: drive. This is your network storage space, which you can use for data backup and/or a public web page.

The printers folder will be mapped to the P: drive. The P: drive must be mapped in order to print to network printers.

The web server share will be mapped to the W: drive. Students, faculty, or staff responsible for editing club pages or other web pages on the main Kellogg web server (www.kellogg.northwestern.edu), will need to have this drive mapped.

If you wish to map to network drives besides the web server, print server, and your home directory, see below for instructions.

Mapping network drives (Non-KLP)

If you have not already done so, you will need to configure your laptop for the Kellogg network. See Windows XP Network Configuration for instructions. (Note: All Kellogg Laptop computers are pre-configured for the Kellogg network.)

1. Go to the Start menu and right-click My Computer. Select Map Network Drive.

2. Choose a drive letter to map (i.e., P:) and enter the drive's network address in the folder field, as illustrated at right. See below for a list of common mapped drives.

Make sure Reconnect at logon is checked.

Common mapped drives

Service Drive Folder
Home Directory H:

\\ksmc01.kellogg.local\<netid>
(i.e., \\ksmc01.kellogg.local\def456)

Web Directory K: \\ksmc01.kellogg.local\web$\<netid>
(i.e. \\ksmc01.kellogg.local\web$\def456$)
Home Directory--Faculty/Staff H: \\ksmc01.kellogg.local\<netid>
(i.e., \\ksmc01.kellogg.local\def456)
Printers P: \\jacobsprinters.kellogg.local\printers
Web Server W: \\kis-nt2.kellogg.local\docs

3. Click Finish.

4. When prompted for a username and password, enter kellogg\<netid> (i.e., kellogg\def456) for your username, and your NetID password for your password. Make sure that "Remember this password" is checked, as illustrated at right.

5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each drive you would like to map.

Note: If you are connecting from an off-campus high-speed connection (cable modem or DSL), you may not be able to connect to network drives without first connecting to Northwestern's Virtual Private Network (VPN) server. See our VPN documentation for instructions.

Password Changes (Non-KLP)

The first time you boot up your computer or try to access a shared drive after changing your NetID password, you may encounter problems connecting to resources or receive a notification that your account is locked.

To resolve this, perform the following steps (Windows XP only):

  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel
  2. Open User Accounts
  3. Click on your user name (e.g. Administrator)
  4. Click on Manage my network passwords on the left
  5. Remove all Kellogg entries and click Close
  6. Close the User Accounts Control Panel

Now that you have cleared your cached passwords, you will need to re-connect to your network drives.

If you select My Computer from the Start menu, you'll see red Xs drawn through your network connections.

You can double-click on a drive and enter your password, but Windows will not remember the new password. To make Windows remember your new password, you will need to remove one of the network drives, then re-connect to it.

Removing Network Drives

If you no longer wish to connect to a network drive at startup, go to the Start menu and right-click My Computer. Select Disconnect Network Drive. Select the drive(s) you wish to disconnect (hold down the shift key to select multiple drives), and click OK.
