Overview
Note: This information only applies to Full-Time, Part-Time, and EMBA 73 -78 students; as well as faculty and staff that have been migrated to the new Kellogg Exchange environment .
All other students, faculty, and staff should continue to use NU Webmail.
Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a great way to access your Kellogg Exchange email when you are not at your laptop. You can sign using your NetID and password here:
https://webmail.kellogg.northwestern.edu

How is OWA different than NU Webmail?
OWA provides direct access to your email, calendar and contacts from anywhere since all that information is stored on Kellogg's Exchange Server. This means that any changes you make in OWA, such as reading, sending, or deleting items, will be reflected in Outlook on your laptop.
NU Webmail only provided access to messages that had arrived since you had last downloaded email to your laptop, and changes such as reading or deleting items were not reflected in Outlook once you returned to your computer.
Additionally, OWA is a much more full-featured client than NU Webmail. OWA saves sent messages, many rules you have configured in the Outlook client on your laptop still apply, and you can configure an Out of Office message right from the OWA interface.

How is OWA Light different than OWA Premium?
OWA Light is designed to work on a wide variety of web browsers. It provides fewer features and may be slightly faster. If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, you can only use the Light client. When using the Light client, you have access only to your email, calendar, and contacts, and the folder structure is more limited by default.
OWA Premium provides access to many more of the features available in the Outlook client. It is possible to drag messages to folders, view Tasks, and view a full week of your calendar at once.

What do the security options on the logon screen mean?
The public and private computer logon options provide different security settings.
If you select "This is a public or shared computer" the server will automatically log you off after a certain period of inactivity.
If you select "This is a private computer", additional time of inactivity will be allowed before the server automatically logs you off.
Regardless of which security option you select, make sure you log off when you are finished using OWA.

What web browsers can I use to access OWA?

OWA Premium works only on Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher.
OWA Light is designed to work on a wide variety of browsers, including Mozilla Firefox 1.8 or later, Opera 7.54 or later, Safari 1.2 or later, and Netscape Navigator 7.1 or later.

How do I set up an Out of Office message in OWA?

The Out of Office Assistant is found by clicking on the "Options" link in the upper-right hand corner.
Please see our page here to learn more about using the Out of Office Assistant.

How do rules work with OWA?

Currently, rules can only be configured by using the full Outlook client. However, most rules that you configure on yourlaptop will still apply when viewing email via OWA.
For example, if you set up a rule on your laptop to move all messages from the class08and09@kellogg.northwestern.edu listserv into a specific folder upon arrival, new messages will still be moved to the specified folder.
Some rules, however, are client-only. Those rules will not be applied when using OWA. To find out if a rule is client-only, open Outlook on your laptop. Then go to Tools > Rules and Alerts. The window that opens will show all the rules you have configured, and it will say (client-only) for rules that are client-only and thus won't be applied in OWA.
