Internet and Printer Connectivity for Laptops Connecting to the Internet with a Laptop — Wireless Ethernet The Allen Center wireless Ethernet network covers all classrooms, group rooms, bedrooms and common areas. Instructions on how to configure your laptop to use the Allen Center wireless network are available here: Connecting to the Internet with a Laptop — Wired Ethernet Laptop users with Ethernet cards may utilize an Ethernet jack in their bedroom, a study group room, or the carrels outside classroom 221. Ethernet jacks are also installed at each seat in classrooms 221 and 223. If your Ethernet-equipped laptop is appropriately configured for our network's DHCP IP Addressing, you should be able to follow the directions below to connect it to the Internet using an Allen Center Ethernet jack. It is very important that you share this information with your company's technical support group, so they can prepare your laptop in advance as necessary. Connect your Ethernet cable into your Ethernet card and into a wall jack marked network or data. Turn on your laptop and use your web browser to see if you are already connected to the Internet. If you are not connected to the Internet, instructions for connecting Kellogg's network are available here: If you need to use a Northwestern mail relay server to send outbound email messages, you may enter the following SMTP server into your email client configuration: merle.it.northwestern.edu. Connecting to the Internet with a Laptop Modem Card Laptop users with modem cards may utilize a phone jack in their bedroom or the carrels outside classroom 221, in order to dial up to their own Internet Service Provider (employer or commercial). In your bedroom, the same charges apply to dialing from your laptop modem as from the voice phone. In other parts of the Allen Center, no charges apply but you may only dial out using a toll-free or local phone number. You should configure your modem to dial 9 to get an outside line, then to dial the appropriate external modem line. It may be helpful to include a pause after the 9 in your modem dialing. The Allen Center's area code is 847. Printing from a Laptop Laptop users may print to the high-speed printers in the study carrels outside classroom 221, by using the printer cables provided for this purpose. The study carrels outside classroom 221 have 2 HP LaserJet 4100 printers. The appropriate manufacturer/model printer drivers must have been loaded on your laptop computer. Download the driver from HP's web site.
Email Connectivity If you would like to utilize email while you are at the Allen Center, it is very important that you prepare for this before leaving home. Employer Email Accounts If your email account resides on your company’s email server, you should request assistance from your company’s technical staff before you come to Kellogg. If you are using a laptop computer with a modem card, we suggest that your technical support staff configure the appropriate phone number and settings into your laptop. Be sure to ask if your company has a toll free modem access number. Toll free area codes include 800, 888, and 777. If you are using a laptop computer with an Ethernet card, we suggest that your technical support staff ensure that it is configured appropriately based on the information above on Internet Connectivity. Some of our participants have been unable to reach their company email account from off-site due to firewalls or other restrictions in place on their company’s servers. If your company has such restrictions, we suggest that you work with your technical support staff to determine if they will be able to allow you to connect from Kellogg. Commercial Email Accounts If you use a commercial email provider (e.g. Earthlink, AOL), you should contact them to request a toll free access number for Illinois or a local access number for the Chicago metropolitan area. Dialing a domestic or international long distance phone number to check your email can become quite expensive. If you connect your laptop to the wired or wireless networks at the Allen Center, you may be able to check your email without using your modem. Consult your email provider for assistance. Web-based Email Accounts You may wish to set your employer or commercial email account to forward to a web-based free email account while you are at the Allen Center, if you would otherwise encounter technical difficulties or high phone costs. This will allow you to use a web browser on any of the Allen Center's desktop computers to send and receive email. Numerous companies offer web-based free email accounts that can be accessed using a web browser on any computer with Internet access. Generally, these companies provide you with an email address, space on their servers to hold your email, and the capability to send and receive email messages through a special web page designed for that purpose. They may also provide other services such as email account forwarding. Two of the more well-known companies are MSN Hotmail (www.hotmail.com) and Yahoo ( www.yahoo.com). You can get more information about web-based free email accounts at www.emailaddresses.com.
