Curriculum and Schedule
Updated: January 22, 2007

First Year (August through May)
Law Courses on the downtown Chicago campus

JD-MBA students spend their first year in residence at the Law School and complete the standard first-year curriculum of the Law School, which includes:

First Summer (June through August)
Cross-listed Courses on the downtown Chicago and Evanston campuses

During the summer term students earn credit toward both degrees while completing at least 10 Law School credit hours. In addition to Law School classes, students may take co-listed classes offered through Kellogg’s Part-Time MBA Program on the Chicago campus. Students may also take courses with students from Kellogg’s One Year MBA Program on the Evanston campus. Because of the full course load, obtaining an internship during the first summer is not encouraged. Students may obtain part-time summer work experience for academic credit through Northwestern’s Corporate Counsel practicum.

Second Year (September through June)
Kellogg Courses on the Evanston campus

JD-MBA students spend their second year in residence at Kellogg on the Evanston campus. Students may take only Kellogg courses during the second year. During the summer term and the second year of the program, students are required to complete Kellogg’s nine core course requirements, in addition to at least seven other electives:

Second Summer (June through August)
Internship

JD-MBA students participate in a summer internship immediately following their second year in the program.

Third Year
(August through June)
Law and Kellogg Courses on the downtown Chicago and Evanston campuses

In the third year, students take classes at both schools as needed to finish the JD-MBA program degree requirements. Typically, students have satisfied all Kellogg requirements by the end of their second year, and they spend the majority of their third year fulfilling the credit requirements of the Law School.

Graduation
JD-MBA students graduate with the Law School and Kellogg classmates with whom they started.

Course Requirements

To graduate, a JD-MBA student must complete:

  • At least 16 Kellogg classes, totaling 16 Kellogg credits*
  • The requirements for at least one Kellogg major
  • 72 semester hours at the Law School, including Legal Ethics
  • At least 5 terms that include 10 or more credit hours of Law School coursework
  • The writing requirement at the Law School

Only classes taken through Northwestern University can be applied toward the above requirements. Classes taken while on exchange or while visiting another institution do not apply toward these requirements.
*Students may take up to 20 Kellogg classes. Students may elect to take additional courses, however, tuition will be charged for each course.

Kellogg Course Waivers
JD-MBA students who have completed previous coursework that may duplicate Kellogg’s core classes may petition to waive any applicable core classes. In most cases, if approved, students must take an upper level elective in its place. Course waivers do not reduce the number of courses required for the degree. Students need not pass out of any courses to complete the program on time.
