What does the senior associate dean of curriculum and teaching do?

One of the major annual job responsibilities of the senior associate dean of curriculum and teaching is to coordinate the building of the teaching schedule. This involves the scheduling of approximately 270 faculty (full-time and part-time) over 250 distinct courses, as well as several programs and campuses. We attempt to provide students with ample course choices and flexibility while avoiding redundant sections. To keep up with market trends and student demand, we add new courses to the schedule each year and gather student feedback for future scheduling considerations.

As you may know, last year we undertook a curriculum review for our full-time and part-time programs. This review led to some changes in the core requirements and the emergence of our curriculum innovation agenda. This agenda will include experimenting with new course formats, creating new small-group thought leadership seminars, exploring new electives designed to tie into our strategic research initiatives, developing co-curricular offerings on effective communication and revising our teacher-course evaluations. I will be working with faculty and administrators to bring this agenda to life. In addition, we are in the midst of a curriculum review for our Executive MBA Program, and I look forward to the outcomes of that review.

Another exciting, recent initiative is Kellogg’s one-year M.S. in Management Studies (MSMS) degree through the new Russell Fellows Program – named for Jim Russell, a 1935 alumnus of Northwestern’s School of Commerce (now Kellogg). This program is largely geared toward liberal arts students to provide them with a solid grounding in management fundamentals. Our first class will begin study this July. I am working with the faculty to set the curriculum and – as it is a new program – to read all of the applications. (I have a new appreciation for our colleagues in the admissions department!)

Indeed, the greatest pleasure for me in the last year and a half on this job has been the opportunity to get to know and work with so many terrific people. This includes many administrators and faculty from Kellogg, of course, but also from other schools at Northwestern, including the law school, McCormick and Medill. In my role, I also have frequent interaction with students and welcome their feedback on ways to enhance the Kellogg classroom experience.

I look forward to all of the great work we’ll continue to do together.

Best,

Mike Fishman
