Dean Z Chats about Delivering the Kellogg Experience
Betsy Ziegler

How does Kellogg create and deliver a distinctive end-to-end student experience across all programs, in much the same way that companies like Ritz-Carlton, Singapore Airlines and Uber deliver their own distinctive experiences?

This is the kind of question that the MBA Operations team – over 100 administrators strong – and Associate Dean of MBA Operations Betsy Ziegler grapple with each day. Creating and delivering the Kellogg experience, from the moment a prospective student becomes interested in Kellogg to the moment they graduate from one of our nine programs, is the focus of MBA Operations, which includes Admissions, EMBA, PTMBA, the MSMS program, Experiential Learning, Student Affairs, Records & Registration and the Career Management Center.

"Kellogg’s distinctiveness is a combination of pioneering thought leadership and world-class academics, a dynamic portfolio of programs—in and out of the classroom—and a strong student culture that is both driven and supportive," says Ziegler. "This powerful combination, and the way we deliver it, is different than any other school."

Ziegler points to recent portfolio innovations – the launch of the MSMS program and redesign of the MMM program – as just two examples of the MBA Operations team at its best, taking an idea and bringing it to life. Another new idea taking root is the pilot of a mentoring program among the team.  Thirteen pairs of mentors and mentees are having regular conversations about personal development and professional growth.

When Ziegler isn’t guiding the MBA Operations team, she’s acting in her role as Dean of Students.  In this capacity, you may have heard her referred to as"Dean Z," a moniker created by a student who stood to ask her a question at her first CIM (Complete Immersion in Management), forgot her name, and called her "Dean Z" instead.

"I spend about 60 percent of my time interacting with students," Ziegler says. "Usually they have an idea for Kellogg or they want to share with me that the team won a competition. It’s very energizing. The Dean’s Consulting Alliance, exit conversations, digital tablet – all were student ideas and all are great examples of the student experience we create together."

Nominate a Kellogg employee for the "Employee Spotlight."

On February 17, Kellogg launched the Guanghua-Kellogg Executive MBA Program, a two-year joint degree program beginning in Fall 2014. Our partnership with the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University, one of the top academic institutions in China, is a major milestone for expanding Kellogg’s global presence, which is a key element of our strategic vision.

Jennifer Gerrard, Linda Feeney and Marni Futterman led a cross-functional team that simultaneously set up operations for the program while preparing for its announcement – all in a condensed, two-month timeframe! This team gathered input from many teams including MBA and EMBA programs, Global Programs, Marketing and Communications, Alumni Relations and the Dean's office. Not to mention, collaboration with Beijing involved a 13-hour time difference and international travel!
