Investment Banking and Capital Markets

Description

The investment banking industry has historically employed more than 1,000 graduates from the leading U.S. business schools each year, representing a significant number of job applicants from many of these schools. Investment banks recruit for positions in investment banking (financing and M&A), sales and trading, research, asset management, private client services and administration. The Kellogg School of Management offers a foundation series of finance courses combined with courses that focus on specific investment banking functions, Wall Street innovations and recent developments within the hedge fund and private equity arenas.

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in these competitive areas must plan their academic program from the moment they begin classes at Kellogg, in order to be prepared for crucial summer-internship interviews that take place in the winter.

To assist students in defining their paths, the Investment Banking and Capital Markets (IBCM) track was established at the Kellogg School. The IBCM track is coordinated by Clinical Professor of Finance David Stowell, who joined the Kellogg School faculty after working for more than 20 years in investment banking in New York, Tokyo and Chicago for Goldman Sachs, UBS and JP Morgan. Professor Stowell teaches Investment Banking which focuses on different businesses within investment banking, with an emphasis on current industry developments. He also teaches Wall Street, Hedge Funds and Private Equity, which focuses on competition and cooperation between investment banks, hedge funds and private equity.

Foundation classes for students interested in investment banking include Investment Banking, Wall Street, Hedge Funds and Private Equity, Derivatives Markets I, and Financial Decisions. Depending on whether a student’s career interests are principally in banking (M&A and financings), sales and trading, research or wealth management (private client services), additional courses may include Financial Planning for M&A, Corporate Restructuring, Financial Strategy & Tax Planning, Derivatives Markets II, Fixed Income Securities, International Finance, Security Analysis, Macroeconomics, Investments and Money Markets and the Fed. Several other courses are also offered to augment understanding of the securities industry.

A key component of the IBCM initiative is the IBCM Club, led by second-year students who have secured summer positions with investment banking organizations. These students are able to provide mentoring and direction for those interested in this industry. A complete calendar which outlines special training seminars offered by the club, speakers from investment banks, field trips to Wall Street, finance conferences and socials is available on the club’s Web site.

The Kellogg School of Management provides an outstanding educational opportunity for students interested in investment banking and capital markets. The IBCM track features a world-class faculty, well-designed classes and a focus on the evolving roles of investment banks, private equity and hedge funds and the corporate, institutional and high net worth clients that are impacted by these key participants in the securities market.
