This page builds a list of Van Mieghem's in the world and serves as a vehicle for any Van Mieghem to get to know one another.
The internet provides us with a great medium and I have received several emails
from namesakes inquiring whether we are related or just wanting to introduce
each other. If you like to participate, email
me and I will add your coordinates and any other information you want
to share to this page. (Send me birth dates + place of your family members
along the Van Mieghem branch.) Peter (° 1950; currently
Marysville, WA) Van Mieghem also maintains a Van Mieghem group on Facebook.
For your information: on April 10, 2006 January 1, 1998, the Belgian
telephone guide listed 476 telephone numbers under the name Van Mieghem,
76 of which in Antwerp. (8 years earlier in 1998, the numbers were 403 and
76) There were 43 listed in The Netherlands. On March 23, 1998, the US
Switchboard telephone guide listed 32
telephone numbers under the name Van Mieghem (or Vanmieghem as listed).
According to my namesake Jan Van
Mieghem, all Van Mieghem's ultimately stem from one family. His family
had a geneology that traced Van Mieghem's to the 14th century. Sadly, this
information was destroyed during "the war" (WWII). Jan says that
he was told that the name "Van Mieghem" originates from a place in Germany
called "Milchheim" (Place with milk). In Poland there still exists a town
called "Miegchow" which means the same.
Below, I have organized the Van Mieghem's that I am aware of along family
trees, starting in Belgium. Default state and family name is Van Mieghem,
Belgium. Other conventions: "x" means "married to" and always the wife's maiden
name is used, if known; ° mean born and + deceased. [complete] means that
the rest of that branch is complete, i.e., without any missing persons. (Realize
that the date format is day-month-year, except for the US where it goes month-day-year.)

- Van Mieghem family in Pamel ("'t klein
kasteeltje", the little castle. This family had many children.)
- one son fought in the army of Napoleon (early 19th century), his leg
was wounded during a battle close to Wittenberg, Poland. He deserted and
fled back 2000km to Belgium (by foot, wounded!) and settled near Antwerp
to avoid his family in Pamel to get into trouble. (Apparently, there were
fewer members of Napoleon's army in Antwerp than near Pamel.] He started
a branch of Van Mieghem's around Antwerp. Relatives include:
- Eugeen
(° 1875-1930; famous painter). Visit www.vanmieghemmuseum.com
- There were several members of the "Int
Panis" family who were painters in Antwerp during the same period.
One actually worked at the arts museum. His son married "Maria Catharina
Van Mieghem, °10 maart 1878 Antwerp, + 13 december 1950 Antwerp".
- On April 3, 2006, I received the following email:
"Dear Sir,
Through research about my own name I discoverred a site about
the Van Mieghem's in the world, apparantly your initiative.
In an expose on the famous painter Eugeen Van Mieghem, who's
work I know very well (cfr. The Red Star Line initiative in
Antwerp, Belgium), I find the following text "There were
several of the "Int Panis" family who were painters
in Antwerp during the same period. One actually worked at the
arts museum. His son married "Maria Catharina Van Mieghem,
° 10 maart 1878 Antwerp - + 13 december 1950 Antwerp".
I have reason to believe that this son was my grandfather, who,
he also, was a painter.
Thanks already and best regards. Fred
