Rafael Carreira joined the John Buck Company in 1993 and served as Principal of the Development Group. His principal roles on development projects were to manage and coordinate critical elements prior to construction which include: feasibility analysis, site acquisitions, entitlements, budgeting, pre-leasing, scheduling, design, and project financing. Once projects were in construction, his responsibilities shifted to leasing, asset management, cost controls, accounting, and reporting.

Mr. Carriera has been involved in a variety of development projects: 222 W. Randolph, Chicago, IL – Proposed 40 story, 750,000 SF Class A+ office building, 155 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL – 46 story, 1,129,000 RSF Class A+ office tower pre-certified LEED-CS Silver, 111 S. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL – 51 story, 1,029,149 RSF LEED-CS Gold office tower and North Bridge Development, Chicago, IL – Nine block 2.5 mixed use development.

Mr. Carreira received his Bachelors of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He is a Registered Architect and a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson in Illinois.

Mr. Carreira is a Lecturer of Real Estate at the Kellogg School of Management – Northwestern University and Project Review Committee Co-Chair for the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association. He is a former member of the Cristo Rey High School, Board of Trustees and the St. Martin de Portes High School, Board of Trustees.

Real Estate Development (REAL-444-0)

Taught by experienced real estate practitioners, this course introduces students to the dynamics of real estate development in the United States using examples and methodologies from past and current real estate projects. The creation of value and risks common to the development of real estate as well as leadership, decision making, financing, budgeting and marketing will be central themes running through the course. Students gain a thorough understanding of real estate development, from the inception of an idea to the design and construction of income-producing real estate. The student will also learn the importance and need for sustainable, environmentally sound development. The course will cover a number of actual real estate developments that the instructors have managed and will use case studies to illustrate each week's topic. Course materials include a real estate development textbook.
