Course Description

M&S D31 is Kellogg's introductory course on strategic management. The subject of the course is the evaluation and formulation of  business strategy. Some of the topics covered by the course are: choosing the scope of the firm; evaluating market economics and the firm's competitive environment; strategically positioning the firm within that environment; creating, exploiting, and sustaining competitive advantage; and understanding the relationships between strategy and functional area decisions. Besides exploring many examples of strategic-management decisions through cases, we will also develop a formal analytic framework for thinking about strategic-management decisions based on recent developments in the fields of economics and strategy. This framework will form the foundation for generating principles of strategic management that can be applied to more general business environments.
