Making a Splash: Creating a Growth Strategy for Thermas Water Park

Abstract

In early 2023, Thermas Water Park, located about 100 miles from the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was at a pivot point. The park had just completed a program of upgrades, including the first phase of a projected 465-room fractional resort in partnership with two development companies. Hoping to build on this momentum, the board of directors tasked management with coming up with a three-year growth strategy that would more than double its projected 2023 attendance and make Thermas the fifth-largest water park in Latin America in terms of attendance. The capital needed to continue expansion of the water park depended on the fractional resort's success, which in turn relied not only on the successful integration of this new business unit with the water park but on factors outside of Thermas's control--most notably the health of the Brazilian economy and the overall stability of Brazilian society. How can management achieve the longer-term goal of Thermas becoming the largest water park entertainment complex in Latin America--in both attendance and gross revenue--by 2040?
