Eleven Kellogg real estate students joined together on November 21st and 22nd for the New York Real Estate Trek. The trek was organized by Jennifer Moore ’13, Andre Newman ’13, and Joseph L. Robinson II ’12. Different from recent treks, this year’s group of students represented the first-year class, the second-year class, and the one-year program. This mix of students combined with four outstanding host companies made for a terrific learning and networking experience. The trek concentrated on real estate finance and direct investing, so most of the conversations focused on opportunities for investment in current market conditions. The following host companies were exceptional in their candor and sharing their time.

The following firms were visited:

AREA Property Partners – Head of U.S. Emerging Markets Jim Simmons ’96 provided an overview of his fund and firm and shared his dynamic path from Kellogg to real estate investing. Mr. Simmons also gave candid career advice to the group.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch – Managing Director Eric Gaaserud and Associates Alan de Castro ’11 and Aaron Reyes introduced the trek group to real estate investment banking. They covered key industry trends and provided unique access to their work through a case study.

The Blackstone Group – Senior Managing Director Frank Cohen and Associate Franco Famularo ’11 presented a case study of a recent investment in detail in addition to a general overview of real estate investing strategy at the firm.

RREEF Real Estate – Pierre Cherki ’97, Global Head of RREEF Real Estate was generous with his time and advice for attendees as he discussed the firm strategy and global real estate markets.
