Tomer Hamami: "Network Effects, Bargaining Power, and Product Review Bias: Evidence"
Abstract:  [Note: This talk focuses mostly on the empirical portions of the paper.] There are many industries in which expert reviews of products exist almost exclusively within the confines of publications or websites dedicated specifically to those industries. Such reviewers depend critically on the cooperation of producers for both advertising revenues and early access to products in order to produce content for consumers. The asymmetry of this relationship creates a conflict of interest; large producers ostensibly have motive and opportunity to flex their bargaining muscles and force reviewers to inflate reviews of their products. In this article, I construct a theoretical framework for studying this possibility and find that it is not obvious that producers have incentive to force inflated reviews when consumers are rational. However, if some fraction of consumers benefits from positive network externalities, there does exist an equilibrium where the producer induces maximal review inflation. As evidence that the video game journalism industry is in this equilibrium, I compare data on both professional and user reviews and demonstrate that professional reviewers are more likely to inflate reviews of games produced by the largest publishers and of games from pre-existing successful franchises. Moreover, this framework yields additional insight about why professional reviews are still so valuable at the height of the information age; in addition to serving as a conduit for information, these reviews serve as a coordination device for enthusiasts with network effects that must jointly decide which products to early adopt.

    Colin Shopp: "Deadlines"
"I raise questions about the role of deadlines in motivating agents. I discuss their purported role within popular management literature and ask whether our current economic tools can fully account for this. I suggest that they cannot and conjecture a different economic force."
