Haas Wins 2013 Kellogg Biotech & Healthcare Case Competition

On Saturday January 26th, teams from around the world competed in the 10th annual Kellogg Biotech and Healthcare Case Competition organized by Professors Sangeeta Vohra & Tim Calkins. The competition was sponsored by AbbVie.

A team from Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley won the competition, with a presentation that featured compelling analytics and sharp strategic thinking. The winning team had five members: Brian Feth, Ken Su, Yelena Bushman, Ji-Hong Boo and Kristian Lau

Second place went to a team from University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and third place went to another team from Haas.

A team from Kellogg School of Management comprised of Anniruddha Chatterjee, Robert Frantz, Paul Janczyk and Sisi Shen received honorable mention for clarity and presentation delivery. The other team that received honorable mention was Cambridge University’s Judge School of Business.

The 2013 competition featured a challenging new case written by Professor Calkins on valuating contrive, Orexigen’s obesity drug which is going through another phase 3 clinical trial.

In total, over 35 teams from around the world applied to participate in the case competition. Ten teams were invited to Evanston for the event and participated, including teams from HBS, Ross and Smeal. A team of executives from AbbVie served as the judges.

This new Kellogg School initiative coordinates and promotes groundbreaking education, research and outreach in both the services and products side of the health sector. Interest in the health sector permeates the Kellogg School. Health Enterprise Management brings together two separate programs, each with a rich tradition of excellence. The Health Industry Management Program that celebrated its 65th anniversary.
