Welcome to class!

Here is some preliminary course information:

Required materials available at the bookstore

  1. Coursepack Part I: cases and readings.
  2. Coursepack Part II: overhead slides.
  3. The Goal by Goldratt and Cox. Publisher: North River Press, 2nd edition, 1992
  4. Managing Business Process Flows by Anupindi, Chopra, Deshmukh, Van Mieghem and Zemel. Publisher: Prentice Hall, First Edition, 1999.
I recommend you buy The Goal as soon as possible so you can start reading it while going to your favorite Christmas/Spring break location. As a novel, The Goal is light reading and some sections are quite entertaining. We will draw on it throughout the course.

For the first class, please read:

  1. Chapters 1 in Managing Business Process Flows.
And contemplate the following questions
  1. In a business context, what is meant by operations?
  2. What are the competitive priorities faced by a typical business (service or manufacturing)?
  3. What role does operations play in achieving these?
See you in class!
