Larry A. Wendling
Staff Vice President
3M Corporate Research
Laboratory
|
Dr.
Wendling has held a succession of technical and management positions throughout
his 3M career. During his 26-year career, he has had the opportunity to develop
and execute technical and business strategies, and lead change, on a global
basis for a significant proportion of 3M’s laboratories and businesses. Most
recently, Dr. Wendling played a principle role in the reorganization of 3M’s
6,500 person global R&D organization and personally has led the formation and
direction of a new 600 person Corporate Research Laboratory charged with the
development of science and technology to support 3M’s future businesses.
He began
his career in 3M’s former Central Research in 1977. From 1981 until 1992, Dr.
Wendling was involved with the formation and development of 3M’s Sector Research
Laboratory concept, which was driven by aligning technology development closer
to 3M’s four business sectors of that time period. He rose to the position of
technical director of the Industrial and Electronic Research Laboratory and 3M’s
Ceramic Technology Center during this period. In this capacity, his
laboratories were involved with a broad spectrum of 3M materials-based
technologies which contributed to the development of technologies supporting key
commercial contributions including: flexible micro circuitry, Li polymer and ion
battery components, a-alumina fiber and metal matrix composites, structural
aerospace resins and composites, and the initiation of 3M’s present focus in
nano-particles and composites.
From
1992-96, Dr. Wendling served as technical director for 3M’s European Business
Center located in Neuss, Germany. During this period, he helped lead 3M’s 1,500
person technical organization from an individual-country organization to a more
European focus, combining a regional strategy with local implementation.
From
1997-2003, he held various positions in 3M’s fluorochemical businesses
including: technical director, executive R&D director and, ultimately, general
manager and vice president of 3M’s Performance Materials Division. In these
assignments, he helped design and commercialize fluoromaterial product families
and businesses based on the principle of environmental sustainability.
Since
October 2003, he has been in his present position as Staff Vice President for
3M’s Corporate Research Laboratory. |
