2012 Kellogg Biotech & Healthcare Case Competition Sponsored by Abbott
University of Michigan Wins 9th Annual Case Competition
On Saturday January 21st, eleven teams from around the world competed in the 9th annual Biotech and Healthcare Case Competition, sponsored by Abbott.
A team from University of Michigan won the competition, with a presentation that featured compelling data driven and logical frameworks for making public health decisions. The winning team had five members: Amit Joshipura, Ryan Waite, Michael Hy, Jeff Dorsheimer and Stefanie Mason. Second place went to a team from Columbia School of Business, and third place went to a team from London Business School. This year two teams received an honorable mention: Kellogg and Rutgers.
The 2012 competition featured a challenging new healthcare case with an operations focus. The case written by Professor Sarang Deo (now at ISB, Hyderabad) with Mihir Naware, Ben Shields and Avidan Ben-Har, all KSM’11, focused on implementation of a new point-of-care diagnostic test for infants with HIV in Africa. Teams had to work with complex data to formulate a recommendation, factoring in the interests of different stakeholders.
In total, over 35 teams from around the world applied to participate in the case competition; the top eleven teams were invited to participate. The competition included teams from nine different MBA programs including IPADE, Mexico; Saïd Business School, Oxford; Haas, Berkeley, Columbia and UC San Diego.
A group of executives from Abbott served as the judges.
The overall quality of the presentations this year was exceptionally high. One returning judge noted, “This was the toughest year yet to judge.”
