An Evening with Gary Weiss, author of “Born to Steal: The Mafia’s Influence on Wall Street”

Kellogg alumni and members of the Medill Club of Greater New York gathered on a late May evening to hear from Gary Weiss (Medill ’76), author of the recently published and much heralded “Born To Steal: When the Mafia Hit Wall Street”. This book has received rave reviews recognizing its witty description of the complex, difficult—and often violent—marriage of the Mob and Wall Street. “Born to Steal” focuses on one particular youthful broker, a street kid from Staten Island who sold his soul to the Mob. During Wall Street's last big bull market, there were brokers in $3,000 suits, billion-dollar IPOs, and 30-year-olds making $100,000 a month. And then there was Louis Pasciuto, who came from Staten Island at the age of 19 and discovered one indelible truth about himself: he was born to steal. This is the astounding, true story of the rise and fall of this fast-talking, street-smart wise guy, as well as the insidious ways the Mob infiltrates, then controls, part of Wall Street. Weiss described the inside story of how “Born to Steal” came into being as well as the surprising lessons that the Mob has to teach us legitimate folks—on subjects ranging from public relations to the virtues of a decentralized chain of command. Weiss is an award-winning veteran investigative reporter for Business Week magazine. His articles on organized crime and stock fraud won praise from FBI Director Louis J. Freeh, who said that Weiss's articles were instrumental in focusing law enforcement attention on the problem of Mob infiltration of brokerage firms, and directly led to indictments and convictions. Special thanks to Dan Williams ’99 for planning this event, and Lauren Young, Medill ’93, for introducing KACNY to Gary Weiss.

An Evening with Best Selling Author Tony Schwartz

Approximately 115 New York area alumni of the Kellogg, Columbia and Harvard business schools and members of The Williams Club came together in early May to learn the secrets of achieving peak performance through “The Power of Full Engagement” from best-selling author Tony Schwartz. The simple truth at the center of this New York Times best-selling business book “The Power of Full Engagement” is that the secret to lasting success lies in how we manage our energy, not our time. While the number of hours in a day is fixed, the quantity and quality of energy available to us is not. This is a phenomenal insight that has the power to revolutionize the way you live your life, allowing you to expand your energy and raise your performance and productivity to new heights. Dozens of Fortune 500 companies—from Estee Lauder to Merrill Lynch to Morgan Stanley to Pepsi—have paid thousands of dollars to send their executives through this program, but approximately 110 attendees of this event learned highlights of the program through the evening's presentation. Special thanks to Dan Williams ’99 for planning this event.
