Inside the Executive Search Profession: As A Client or Candidate, How to Build Effective Relationships with Search Consultants

Kellogg alumni gathered on an evening in early June at a private Manhattan club to get the inside line on the retained executive search profession, including answers to topics such as Navigating the Universe of Executive Recruiters-What to Know and Who to Know; Laying the Groundwork for Long-Term Career Development; Selecting an Executive Search Firm & Search Consultant as A Corporate Client; Conducting a Shootout: Is it Necessary?; Negotiating an Executive Compensation Package in Today’s Market. The panel included discussion about how retained search consultants work with candidates and clients, how they identify who is right for their search engagements, and what you need to know to build solid relationships with them. Having held management positions in boutique executive search firms and with large global retained search firms, these four recruiters have a wealth of inside knowledge about how companies (from the Fortune 500 to private start-ups) make hiring decisions at the senior-level. Panelists included: Sandra Rupp (panel leader and principal at Boyden Global Executive Search), Ashton McFadden (founder and the managing partner of Beacon Search Group), Margaret Chan (client partner in Korn/Ferry International’s New York Office and member of the Global Consumer Practice), and Joseph Healey (founding partner and president of Sextan Search Partners). Special thanks to Sandra Rupp ’90, KACNY’s VP of career development, for planning this event.
