Health Industry Management HIMT
Offered by the Health Industry Management Program

In order to complete a major in Health Industry Management (HIM), students must complete four courses. At least one course must be industry-specific and at least one course must be function-specific.

  Industry-specific courses:
    INTL-442 International Healthcare Systems**
HIMT-440 Introduction to the Principles and Management of Health Industry Systems **
    HIMT-441 Health Policy
HIMT-451 Legal Issues in Health Care Delivery
HIMT-453 Managerial Challenges in the Pharmaceutical, Biotech, and Medical Device Industries
HIMT-455 Special Topics in Health Industry Management
HIMT-512 Health Services Management Field Study / Project Management
BIOT-911 Dynamics of the Biotechnology and Life Science Industry

  Function-specific courses:
ACCT-432 Information Technology in Healthcare Management
ACCT-479 Financial Assessment & Performance Evaluation of Health Care Entities
    MGMT-444 Healthcare Economics and Strategy
  * MORS-454A Creating and Managing Strategic Alliances and
  * HIMT-452B Advanced Strategic Management in Healthcare
*Note: MORS 454-A and HIMT 452-B, taught by Prof. Zajac, are each 1/2 credit but must be taken together to count toward the HIMT major.

In addition to the above courses, certain sections of the following offerings may also satisfy HIM major requirements for a function-specific course subject to approval by the HIM Program Director. The following courses will generally satisfy the HIMT major requirements if taught by a Health Industry Management faculty member.
    MGMT-469 Empirical Methods in Strategy
    MGMT-463 Management of Technology

** Both International Healthcare Systems and Introduction to the Principles and Management of Health Industry Systems are one credit courses, however, students can apply only one of these two courses to fulfill the Health Industry Management major requirement.

In addition to these distribution requirements, students must attain the approval of the HIM Program Director. This approval is necessary since Program faculty want to assure students that they receive the optimal breadth and depth of training in this concentration, consistent with the individual’s background and career path.
