CARE director
visits Prof. Austen-Smith's class
03/06/2007
— Bob Bell, director of food resources for CARE, was a guest
speaker in Professor David Austen-Smith's SEEK-460 Values-Based
Leadership class on Tuesday, March 6th. Mr. Bell presented to the
class on a US Food Aid policy case, “Farmers, Charities Join
Forces To Block Famine-Relief Revamp: Bush Administration Wants
To Purchase African Food; Lobby Says Buy American. Proposal Is Stuck
in Congress” written by Roger Thurow and Scott Kilman for
the Wall Street Journal’s October 26, 2005 edition.
From the
article:
“American
humanitarian groups, armed with food donated by the U.S. government,
have fed millions of starving people around the world over the
past half-century. So Bush administration officials figured the
charities would support changes to America's food-aid program
aimed at saving even more lives from famine.”
“Starting
next year, the White House wants to spend one-quarter of its food-aid
budget to buy overseas goods to feed starving foreigners. Currently,
it's required to buy that produce from American farmers. The administration
says the change will cut the cost of buying and shipping commodities
and save 50,000 more lives a year.”
Following Mr.
Bell’s lecture, students in the SEEK 460 class gave group
presentations on projects they worked on related to the Wall
Street Journal Food Aid article.
