Industry Management Program
Over the
next few years, the United States is expected to increase
its healthcare spending to over 2 trillion dollars. Internationally,
healthcare costs are also rising rapidly, and many nations
are looking to our country for models to help them deal with
this problem. Simultaneously, an explosion of technology has
occurred that will require managers have a new set of skills,
coupled with knowledge of traditional healthcare organizations.
To meet the educational challenges of this rapidly evolving
field, the Health Industry Management (HIM) Program provides
students with a managerial and technical foundation for careers
in consulting, medical products, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology,
financial services, venture capital, health care systems,
health plan management and insurance, associations and government.
Students
interested in health industry management complete several
majors at the Kellogg School. Program faculty
advisors meet with students to customize their course
selection based on past experience and career goals. Research
opportunities are also available for students who want to
work with a faculty member on a focused project.
The HIM
faculty have national and international reputations in their
particular areas of expertise and play a very active role
as consultants and advisors to national firms, government
agencies and many professional organizations. Several HIM
faculty members have won prestigious awards for their ground-breaking
healthcare research and writing. The program faculty have
been gratified that their peers have identified HIM as one
of the leading programs in the country.
The program
faculty are also involved in cutting-edge health industry
research centers. The Center
for Health Industry Market Economics (CHIME) promotes
business and public policy research on the healthcare industry
and related industries. Healthcare economist Professor David
Dranove, is the first director of and strategist behind CHIME.
The Center
for Research on Strategic Alliances is headed by Edward
Zajac, Ph.D. This center focuses on better understanding
inter- and intra-organizational arrangements. Complementing
these research efforts is an extensive program of executive
development seminars offered in conjunction with many leading
national healthcare organizations and associations.
Additionally,
Kellogg has a very active 300-member Healthcare/
Biotechnology Club for students interested in careers
in healthcare or life science-related industries. The students
organize and present annually a highly acclaimed Biotech
& Healthcare Conference. The Health Industry Management
Program has a 1100-member alumni association which supports
the Program, the School and health industry graduates through
a variety of annual activities and communications.
In addition
to resources based at the Kellogg School, the HIM Program
sponsors a Mentor Program. This popular offering enables small
groups of students to meet with a nationally-known, locally-based
healthcare executive to discuss topics of mutual interest.
Mentors represent such healthcare sectors as consulting, pharmaceuticals,
medical products, healthcare systems, financial services and
venture capital.
Although
most students seek placement opportunities from the Kellogg
School's Career
Management Center, many job searches in the healthcare
field involve small organizations or single position offerings.
Program faculty and an extensive HIM alumni network are eager
to help students who require more customized assistance with
their searches.
