At the Kellogg School of Management and Northwestern University our doctoral students have a wealth of resources and support networks to draw from: academic alliances, student clubs and organizations, professional development, and family and childcare.
On average, Kellogg doctoral students complete their PhD degrees in five years of full-time study. During that time, they become an integral part of the
Kellogg and
Northwestern communities, as well as the
Evanston and
Chicago communities as a whole. Our students draw from the numerous
community resources and housing options available to Northwestern students.
Within the
academic community Kellogg doctoral students forge research partnerships with their fellow students and faculty that will last throughout their careers. To foster this
collaborative research environment, Kellogg students are housed within their chosen academic department so that they can easily interact with faculty and students. Our students also work closely with colleagues in related fields outside of Kellogg, such as the Departments of Economics, Sociology, Psychology, and Political Science through the
Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; the Engineering Departments at the
McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and
Northwestern Law.
Weekly seminars and “brown bag” lunch seminars provide other, more casual, opportunities to exchange ideas and socialize.
A thriving community of friends, spouses, partners, and children is a lively component of the Kellogg community. Each fall we welcome our new doctoral students with several orientation programs to familiarize them with life at Kellogg and Northwestern and acquaint them with the various resources available to them and their families. There are
student organizations and clubs,
intramural sports leagues, and support services for
international students,
student parents,
women, and
students with disabilities. The
Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs provides an introduction to
graduate life at Northwestern celebrates the
diversity of Northwestern's student population. Their office provides support services and networking opportunities, which are outlined in this
student resources handout (pdf.).
Professional development workshops, sponsored by
The Graduate School, include writing tips, dissertation boot camp, English as a Second Language (ESL), working with research advisors, teaching excellence, job market tips, and more.
The support network of Kellogg professors and Kellogg alumni located at academic institutions throughout the world helps launch our
doctoral students on the job market. While at Kellogg, our students transition from students to colleagues with the support of professional development and mentoring they receive from our faculty – emerging as researchers and teachers in their own right. As they enter the job market, Kellogg students boast a solid research portfolio: research papers that have been rigorously tested through seminar presentations, conferences, and discussions with faculty.
The time spent at Kellogg sets the academic research agenda for our doctoral graduates in the coming years. As professors, our doctoral graduates contribute their hard work and research capital to their employing research institution and the academic community as a whole.
