Women's Business Association: Women in the Workplace Part 1- May 15, 2012Why do women continue to be under-represented in elite leadership roles? The WBA will be hosting a two-part series focusing on "Women in the Workplace". The first installment, led by Beth Michaels, highlights the current state of prejudice and obstacles for women leaders in the workplace. Beth Michaels is President of Primer, Michaels and Associates, a management consulting firm specializing in leadership, culture, and short term strategic planning and implementation. The second installment of the series will host a panel of successful female executives who will share their own experiences as a female employee and leader in their organizations.

Gabe has nearly 24 years of marketing and leadership experience. He is currently Vice President, US Marketing for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Most recently, Gabe was Vice President, Regional Marketing, Mentor Corporation where he was responsible for regional marketing in the EMEA, Latin America, and Asia Pacific regions. Gabe was instrumental in the successful integration of Mentor Corporation into Ethicon Inc. and Johnson & Johnson, a large acquisition that included the assimilation of 1,400 employees at six worldwide locations.

Dr. C. Shad Thaxton, MD, PhD, talked about his research efforts in nanotechnology and his involvement with several start-up companies commercializing his discoveries. He also discussed current and future opportunities for nanotechnology in both the diagnostic and therapeutic areas. Dr. Thaxton is an Assistant Professor and full-time research faculty member in the Feinberg School of Medicine Department of Urology.

He leads the Bureau that is responsible for overseeing work on international trade and investment policy; international finance, development, and debt policy; economic sanctions and combating terrorist financing; international energy security policy; international telecommunications and transportation policies; and support for U.S. businesses and the private sector overseas.
