Kellogg welcomes James Stengel as Senior Fellow and adjunct professor

Former Procter & Gamble global marketing officer joins Kellogg

6/2/2017 -

James StengelKellogg is pleased to announce the appointment of James Stengel as Senior Fellow with the Kellogg Markets and Customers Initiative (KMCI). The announcement represents our commitment to bringing together faculty scholarship with industry leaders who have been top in their field, in order to provide a holistic view of the real-time ways in which marketing and customers are constantly changing.

Stengel is President and CEO of The Jim Stengel Company, and a prolific writer, speaker and advisor. Widely known for leading innovation and for his commitment to building purpose-inspired leadership capabilities, Stengel is the former Global Marketing Officer of Procter & Gamble, and a former member of the Board of Directors for AOL and Motorola.

Stengel was recognized in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007 by Advertising Age as the number one “Power Player” in marketing. In 2005, he was recognized as Grand Marketer of the Year by Brandweek magazine, the same year P&G was named Marketer of the Year by Advertising Age magazine. Stengel was named to the first-ever Fortune Executive Dream Team in 2011.

Stengel has served as Dean of the Young Marketers Academy at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity since 2011, where he pioneered the CMO Accelerator program in 2013, and continues to serve as Dean. In his book, Grow, Stengel shows how 50 of the highest-performing companies in the world harnessed the power of brand ideals to tower over their competitors – and how other businesses can, too. Stengel is currently working on a new book, Unleashing the Innovators: How Mature Companies Find New Life With Startups to be released on September 5, 2017. He holds a BA from Franklin & Marshall College, and an MBA from The Pennsylvania State University, Smeal School of Business.

“I am delighted to welcome Jim to Kellogg as a Senior Fellow,” said Gregory Carpenter, James Farley/Booz Allen Hamilton Professor of Marketing strategy and Faculty Director of KMCI. “Having enjoyed significant success in demanding leadership roles, Senior Fellows bring something very special to Kellogg. Jim’s extraordinary impact on marketing and his experience as a leader in the transformation of P&G will enrich our understanding of the future of marketing and the changing role of Chief Marketing Officers.

In his position, Stengel will collaborate with faculty on research and executive education. Stengel’s extensive accomplishments in industry are a natural complement to the research and expertise of the world’s leading marketing department. The past several years have laid a solid foundation for these partnerships: Stengel has spoken at Kellogg’s Marketing Leadership Summit and Chief Marketing Officer Program.

Having worked closely with Carpenter and other Kellogg faculty and administrators in the past few years – most recently on a whitepaper that focuses on Stengel’s tenure at P&G – Stengel is excited to continue exploring new opportunities in his new role.

"I am looking forward to working with arguably the strongest academic and practitioner marketing community in the world, and one that I know well from my years at P&G and in my involvement with Kellogg programs since then," said Stengel. “I am also looking forward to learning from the gifted Kellogg faculty and staff, while sharing my learning from my career as practitioner."
