Barbara Shwom is Senior Lecturer in Management and Organizations, teaching Writing in Organizations, and Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Northwestern University’s Writing Program. A nationally recognized leader in business communication, Professor Shwom has served as president of both the Association for Business Communication and the Association of Professional Communication Consultants. At Northwestern, she has been recognized for teaching excellence by being named a Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturer.

Professor Shwom earned both an M.A.and Ph.D. in English at Northwestern. Her research interests include evolving genres of business communication, visual communication of data, and methods of persuasion. Her coauthored book Graphic and Visual Communication for Managers (Cengage) is in its second edition. She is also co-author of a new business communication text book which will be published by Prentice Hall in 2010.

Professor Shwom is also the managing principal of the consulting firm Communication Partners, which specializes in communication consulting, strategy, and training . Clients include Abbott, Eli Lilly, Amgen, Medtronic, ZS Associates, Price Waterhouse Coopers, HSBC, Maritz Research, and Sargent and Lundy.

Writing in Organizations (MORS-449-A)

This course does not count toward the Management & Organizations major.

This five-week mini-course is for students who want intensive writing experience and feedback to help them think strategically about communication. Weekly writing assignments are based on communication cases--scenarios in which managers must write memos and reports to implement policies, explain strategies, announce changes and analyze problems. The final grade is based on a writing portfolio of revised memos, written feedback to other students, a report and a self-assessment memo in which students compare their progress to their original goals. This course does not count toward the MORS major.

Writing in Organizations (MORS-449-B)

This course does not count toward the Management & Organizations major.
